Why the core matters
The bank's core is the system of record. When the regulator asks "what was Mary's balance at 11:59pm on June 30?", the core is the answer. The mobile app is a view, the fintech's sub-ledger is a view, the BaaS middleware is a view. The core is the truth.
This sounds obvious until you watch a middleware failure in slow motion: customer funds reconciled to the middleware sub-ledger but not the sponsor bank's core, and when the middleware company died, the customers found out which ledger actually counted.
When to think about it
You think about the core when designing reconciliation, when picking a sponsor bank, and when negotiating data-feed cadence and grain. A good BaaS program reconciles to the sponsor's core daily — not the middleware's sub-ledger.
Common pitfalls
- Treating the sub-ledger as the core. The sub-ledger is a view; only the core is the system of record.
- Daily-only reconciliation. Modern programs reconcile multiple times per day; a 24-hour blind spot is enough for a six-figure mismatch to grow.
- Black-box cores. Some legacy cores expose limited data feeds. The sponsor's core capabilities materially shape what a fintech program can do.
You don't have to love the core to build on it, but you do have to respect it.
