Why FedNow matters
FedNow gives US payments a second instant rail. Before FedNow, real-time interbank payments meant The Clearing House's RTP network — a private-sector consortium owned by large banks. FedNow opens the same capability to any depository institution with a Fed master account, including smaller community banks that previously couldn't get RTP economics to work.
For fintechs, that means more sponsor-bank options for instant push payments, payroll-on-demand, and merchant payouts.
When to use it
Use FedNow whenever you need final, irrevocable funds to land in the receiver's bank account in seconds — gig-economy payouts, marketplace settlements, treasury movements between corporate accounts, B2B invoice payments where speed unlocks dynamic discounting. Use ACH when speed doesn't matter and cost does.
Common pitfalls
- Sponsor connectivity is uneven. Not every sponsor bank has FedNow live, and the ones that do may not pass it through to fintech programs.
- Irrevocability cuts both ways. Once sent, FedNow can't be clawed back. Fraud-screen before send, not after.
- Pricing varies. Sponsor banks charge differently for FedNow vs RTP vs same-day ACH; the rail you pick is partly a cost decision, not just speed.
Two instant rails is a feature, not a complication — design your stack to use either.
